How Zero-Width Characters Work

Zero-width characters are special Unicode characters that are rendered with no visible width. These include:

  • Zero-Width Space (U+200B): An invisible space character
  • Zero-Width Non-Joiner (U+200C): Prevents characters from joining
  • Zero-Width Joiner (U+200D): Forces characters to join

Our tool encodes your message by converting each character into a unique combination of these zero-width characters. When pasted into text, they appear completely invisible but contain your hidden message.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are zero-width characters detectable?

While invisible to the naked eye, zero-width characters can be detected using specialized tools or by checking character counts. However, most people won't notice their presence in normal text.

Do all platforms support zero-width characters?

Most modern platforms that support Unicode text will preserve zero-width characters. However, some platforms may strip or filter these characters for security reasons.

Can I use this for sensitive information?

While zero-width characters provide a layer of obscurity, they are not encryption and shouldn't be used for highly sensitive information. They're best for casual privacy or fun messaging.

Is there a limit to how much text I can hide?

There's no strict limit, but longer messages create more zero-width characters, which may increase the chance of detection or filtering on some platforms. We recommend keeping hidden messages relatively brief.
